As Donald Trump prepares to enter the Oval Office as president for a second term, how does this moment compare to the previous two: President Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 and that of President Biden four years ago? Well, President Trump’s inauguration speech in 2017 was marked by a defiant promise to challenge the status quo, drain the swamp, and follow up on his campaign promise to make America great again in 2021. President Biden was sworn in amid masks and social distancing measures as the COVID-19 pandemic continued. Well, just days after the January 6th Capitol insurrection, his message was one of reconciliation and a warning against the dark winter of divisive politics. Unusually, the outgoing president did not attend the ceremony. So, what can we expect this time around? Well, poor weather has forced the ceremony indoors, but a global audience will pay attention to President Trump’s words as an indication of his intentions during his second term in office.
