Hassan Whiteside. NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2016. NBA leader in blocked shots. NBA rebounding champion in 2017. The Miami Heat were supposed to be tanking in 2016-17, but sitting at 11-30, they proved that no team with Pat Riley and Eric Spoelstra should ever be underestimated or overlooked. After reeling off 13 straight wins, the Heat came within one Brooklyn tank job from making the playoffs, which would’ve put the capper on one of the most magnificent in-season turnaround’s in NBA history. A team that goes 30-11 in the back half of the season is a team that deserves to be remembered, and sitting at the center of that Miami squad was Hassan Whiteside, the man who looms so large that he blocks out the sun for some. Hassan had a career year during the 2016-17 season. 32.6 minutes per game through 77 games, a league leading 14.1 rebounds per, career-best assists and steals too, with 17.0 points per game capping off an all-time year for him. The only thing he didn’t top was the 3.7 blocks per game he had during the 2015-16 season, but the 161 total number of shots he swatted were done so in impressive fashion and warranted at least a video. The aim of this isn’t necessarily to say that Hassan is best shot blocker. He used to try to get everything, with his quick leap and great timing, he’d get a lot more than he missed…but even though he blocked less shots by keeping his feet, he’s provided better rim protection on the whole for Miami. What I did want to highlight, however, is his ability to block shots and keep the ball in play. Bill Russell initiated the Boston Celtics’ classic fast breaks with his shot blocking and rebounding, Whiteside provides a similar value (I am definitely NOT comparing Whiteside to Russell) to his Heat. Keeping the ball inbounds when swatting a shots triggers Miami’s transition game and with the terrific talent and incredible athleticism on the wings, guys like Goran Dragic, Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson, Wayne Ellington, Dion Waiters, James Johnson, and the rest just blitz opponents on the break.
