Can we choose what we believe? Or does belief happen to us? In this episode of How to Push Back, I sit down with Jon Cohen, author of Unconvinced, to explore one of the most important questions in philosophy of religion and psychology: Is belief voluntary? We discuss the debate over doxastic voluntarism, the idea that belief is something we can choose, and what neuroscience suggests about how convictions actually form. If we can’t simply decide to believe something, that raises serious questions. What does the Bible say about unbelief? Is non-belief a sin? Do heaven and hell assume belief is under our control? And if salvation depends on belief, is that fair? This conversation examines how belief works, how Scripture frames unbelief, and what happens when systems treat belief as a moral choice rather than a cognitive process. If you care about faith, free will, persuasion, theology, or critical thinking, this episode will give you a lot to think about. Extended version available soon for deeper discussion.
