Harecastle Tunnel

Harecastle Tunnel on The Trent and Mersey Canal was the world’s longest canal tunnel when it was originally built by Brindley in 1777. The original tunnel is no longer in use due to subsidence. A second tunnel was built by Telford in 1827 and this is the tunnel in use today. It took around 9 million bricks in its construction! From 1827 to 1914 both tunnels were in use, the Brindley tunnel was used for southbound traffic and the Telford one for northbound. The Telford tunnel was built a little wider than the Brindley one and originally had a towpath, later removed when the tunnel was closed between 1973 and 1977 to deal with further subsidence. The tunnel has several different levels in the roof, starting off with lots of clearance but dropping substantially at various points. There is a huge fan which runs to draw out diesel fumes and it can be heard on the video. My boat is almost silent, being electric, but you can hear the sound of other boats in the convoy behind me.
