The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has raised alarm over emerging patterns of child abuse following a series of public hearings held in Mumbwa and Nangoma, where community members and local leaders delivered submissions on the escalating violations affecting children. During the hearing in Nangoma, a health worker reported an increase in cases of abuse involving boys, including defilement and sexual assault. The official stressed that while public discourse often focuses on the protection of girls, boys are also at significant risk and require equal attention, protection, and support services. At Kasalu Primary School in Nangoma, Headwoman Chipabika of Chief Shakumbila’s area appeared before the Commissioners to present her concerns regarding child welfare in her community. She highlighted the need for coordinated interventions to safeguard children from various forms of abuse. Meanwhile, in Mumbwa, Headman Chimboyi petitioned the Commission over the persistent problem of child marriages. He described the practice as a continuing threat to the rights, health, and development of children and urged the HRC to intensify efforts to curb the vice. The Human Rights Commission is expected to compile submissions from the public hearings and develop recommendations aimed at strengthening child protection systems in affected communities.
