The largest temple amongst the Khajuraho group of temples, Kandariya Mahadeva Temple was constructed between 1025-1050 CE during the reign of Vidyadhara. The temple, with its magnificent architecture and intricate carvings, represents the golden age of temple architecture in India.Kandariya Mahadeva temple is built on a panchyatan layout, similar to the The Khajuraho temples. The exterior of the temple resembles a steep mountain form, symbolic of Mount Meru. A key feature of the temple is its striking Shikhara which is surrounded by 84 smaller spires. The structure of the Shikhara is similar to the shape of Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiva.The temple also has the largest number of sculptures, which consist of deities such as Agni and Saptamatrikas, as well as erotic scenes.
