On May 26, 2022, the Japan Society of Northern California held an in-person workshop all about Reiho. Everyone was able to learn about Japanese etiquette taught by the Ogasawara family to the Samurai over 800 years ago! The Ogasawara family was charged by the Shogun to teach, maintain, and pass down the rules and practice of Rei, Japanese etiquette, and the traditions continue to this day. Observing proper etiquette in simple actions of eating, drinking, gift giving, and greeting others will lead to appropriate manners governing all of our everyday behavior. In this class we will learn and practice table manners, presenting and receiving food or drink, gift giving, and bowing. Those interested in tea ceremony, flower arranging, martial arts, and Budo will all benefit by learning these fundamentals. The workshop was followed by a networking hour that allowed attendees to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and enjoy light snacks and wine.
