After the autumn full moon in Essex, woodland and fields reveals record crops of wild mushrooms as expert picker and forager Leon Lewis finds everything from ceps to fly agaric. The Hunter's Moon is also known as the Travel Moon and the Dying Moon. These names date back to ancient people's who associated the brighter light from the October full moon in October with preparing for winter by collecting plenty of food. The Hunter's Moon is a important time in the year when the sunset and moonrise are closer together than normal. This light traditionally made October a good time to gather food after the harvest. Modern historians tend to link the light to the male hunt, hence the name, but they ignore the fact that October 13 and the days immediately after the full moon were also the best time to harvest mushrooms, chestnuts and other plants that could be dried and dehydrated for the winter months. Apologies for the sometimes dodgy camera work, but uploaded because I thought Leon's mushroom commentary and enthusiasm for the mammoth crop of fungi was worth keeping.
