We made 2mm-thick overlays of pure portland cement paste (type II-V) so that it would shrink as it dried outside. The same batch of cement was split into two parts: one control, and one with about 3% of 3D-Admix added (which equates to less than 1% of total concrete). In four tests, each over a few hours, we could not get the 3D-Admix-modified cement to crack, except for one visible (at an edge of duct tape on the substrate). 3D-Admix is an undiluted Shrinkage Reducing Agent liquid that carries thousands of tiny reservoirs pre-saturated with the SRA. The combination of 3D-Admix gelling action and evaporation-reduction reduces or entirely prevents initial plastic shrinkage, as the admix solids exchange the SRA for excess water. Subsequent internal curing is provided as the array of micro reservoirs slake the thirsty hydrating portland cement, reducing drying shrinkage and increasing in-situ strength and durability. For typical vertical-buildability applications, 3D-Admix is dosed at around 0.25% of total concrete volume, as it is typically dosed inline. Some applications will dose as low as about 0.1%. The upper range is limited by the thickening action (overthickening), unless a less-thickening admix version (meant for flatwork) is used. As the non-shrink effect is so surprisingly good, we will be further developing those versions.
