Hippolyte & Aricie was written in 1983/4 for the group Regular Music. It was performed many times by the group and parts 1 & 2 were included on the 1985 Rough Trade record which was re-released in 2019 by Klanggalerie, Vienna. The piece is based on an unusual chord sequence featured in Jean Philippe Rameau's opera of the same name. It occurs as a dramatic rapid chromatic descent in the Trio Des Parques. It's so brief it passes by in 5 bars. I actually got the sequence from Donald Jay Grout's History of Western Music and was drawn to its fatalistic simplicity. It repeats only 2 steps in different directions which brings to mind the movement of a knight on a chess board. In the key of C these would be: C up to Em, then Em down to B (now repeat starting on B instead of C, and so on enharmonically through the whole chromatic scale...). My piece finds new ways of sequencing and developing this chord progression which alters the mood and part 3 in particular is quite uplifting. [A similar sequence was later used in GodSpeed You Black Emperor's 2002 track 'Rockets fall on Rocket Falls'] This score is a recreation of the recording made at the time - I didn't collect all the parts after the group disbanded !
