The Nocturne No. 20 in C♯ minor, Op. posth., Lento con gran espressione, P 1, No. 16, KKIVa/16, WN 37, is a solo piano piece composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1830 and published in 1875. This hauntingly beautiful posthumous piece played by Holocaust survivor and famed Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman featured in the 2002 Roman Polanski film The Pianist. Hosenfeld later helped Szpilman hide and provided food to him in the last months of the war. This piece was also played by Holocaust survivor Natalia Karp for the Nazi concentration camp commandant Amon Goeth, with Goeth being so impressed with the rendition that he spared Karp's life. Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp minor is a work of striking intimacy and emotional depth. Unlike some of his more virtuosic nocturnes, this piece speaks directly to the heart with simplicity and sincerity. ABRSM (UK): Around Grade 7–8. The lyrical sections are manageable at Grade 7, but the middle agitato with runs, ornaments, and fast chords leans more toward Grade 8. RCM (Canada): Level 9 (advanced). Henle Verlag: Level 6 (medium to difficult) on their 1–9 scale. Most recommended recordings of Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor: Arthur Rubinstein – Warm, lyrical, and deeply human; Rubinstein’s Chopin is often considered a gold standard. Maria João Pires – Intimate, delicate, and deeply poetic—her phrasing feels like spoken poetry. Vladimir Horowitz – Highly dramatic and emotional, with more freedom and rubato than most pianists.
