The lesson explores the following concepts regarding literary genres: What is a Genre? A genre is defined as a category of artistic work that possesses a specific form or set of characteristics. The term originates from a French word meaning "kind" or "type." Knowing the genre of a work is useful because it provides the reader with certain expectations before they even begin to read. In general, works are considered to be in the same genre if they share enough common characteristics. The Four Main Literary Genres The video focuses on the four main literary genres: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama. One trait that all works of literature may share is the potential use of figurative language (such as similes, metaphors, personification, and irony). Poetry: This genre is rhythmic writing intended to express or elicit an emotional response. Poetry is written in lines and stanzas rather than sentences and paragraphs. It is usually shorter than other genres and is abundant in figurative language, emphasizing imagination, emotions, and heartfelt ideas. A key sub-genre discussed is epic poetry, which is long narrative poetry chronicling heroic deeds and serious subject matter. Fiction: Works of fiction are invented stories that are not real. Fiction is written in prose, meaning it utilizes sentences and paragraphs with proper punctuation and grammar, rather than the formal patterns of poetry. Since fiction is based on imagination, its subject matter can be nearly anything. Sub-genres include novels, short stories, fables, legends, folk tales, and fairy tales. Nonfiction: This genre comes from real life and is based on real-world experiences, people, events, and places. Like fiction, nonfiction is written in prose. While it can use figurative language, it is generally not as abundant as in poetry or fiction. Examples include journals, diaries, biographies, autobiographies, and essays. Drama: Drama is a story written specifically to be performed for an audience. Actors impersonate characters to act out the story, which is often driven by conflicts. Dramas rely heavily on dialogue (conversation between characters) to tell the story and describe the setting, plot, and motives. Sub-genres of drama include comedies, tragedies, tragicomedies, and histories. Sub-Genres The video notes that within the four main genres, there are more specific types of literature referred to as sub-genres. These sub-genres, such as romance novels, mysteries, science fiction, comedies, tragedies, and historical plays, provide more detailed descriptions of the reading or viewing experience. The evolution of culture leads to the evolution and mutation of genres.
