Bio By She Rox All Female Bands: Seattle, Washington based 7 Year Bitch began in 1990, at the forefront of the of the Seattle grunge movement. 7 Year Bitch were one of the few all female bands to emerge from the movement from its conception, all though lumped by many as a "riot girl" band, this was far from accurate. The Riot Girl movement was based out of Olympia, Washington not Seattle and these bands, predominately female bands and female musicians focused more on a message of women's empowerment more so than the music they were making, in many opinions. The fact that 7 Year Bitch also at times focused on serious issues and women's rights is perhaps why some were quick to label the band a riot girl band, however they were not involved in that movement though they supported it. Focused more on their sound and being good players, this resulted in an aggressive mix of punk, aspects of heavy metal and grunge making it was hard to put the band into a simple box though many tried. 7 Year Bitch were the epitome of building a band from the ground up, paying their dues would have been and understatement even for the early 1990's, concurring Seattle's punk scene did not take long, and the band quickly made a name for themselves. The band's first single Lorna/No Fuckin' War/You Smell Lonely was released in 1991, this would be followed up with the 4-song ep, in 1992, Antidisestablishmentarianism, and a duo single in 1992 with punk rockers Thatcher On Acid, covering the band's No Fuckin' War, and 7 Year Bitch covering their version of Can We Laugh. With the band's popularity growing they also released in 1992 the 6-song ep, Chow Down. The singles and tracks on the eps would make up the band's debut full length album in 1992 titled Sick Em. Sadly, before the release of Sick Em, guitarist and co-founder Stefanie Sargent passed away at the age of 24. The remaining members carried on knowing that is what Stefanie would have wanted and soon recruited band friend and guitarist Roisin Dunne. By this point the band was already gaining far more than local notoriety and played with many heavy weight bands from L7 to Red Hot Chili Peppers to name just a few. Tragedy would face the band again when friend and Gits front women Mia Zapata was brutally raped and murdered in 1993, Zapata and her band the Gits, described by some as punk rock's answer to Janis Joplin was rising herself in the underground punk and grunge scene. Her murder would go unsolved for a decade before the perpetrator would finally be arrested in 2003. 7 Year Bitch released the full-length album Viva Zapata in 1994 paying homage to both Sargent and Zapata. Viva Zapata was a bit more mature and heavier with more melodic tracks and was listed in Rollings Stone's list of the 50 greatest grunge albums, produced by grunge rock genius Jack Endino known for producing such bands as Nirvana and Sound Garden to name a few. Viva Zapata also found support by major label Atlantic Records who soon signed the band as well. This support along with the band appearing in the major motion picture release, Mad Love starring Drew Barrymore in 1995, opened the band up to a broader audience far beyond just the states. Now on Atlantic the band released its third final studio album in 1996, Gato Negro, at what could be called the band at the height of their career the album received mixed reviews with some quick to label Gato Negro as generic grunge. Perhaps missing the edge that Viva Zapata contained and the light heartiness in writing of Sick Em, Gato Negro was still a fan favorite and a strong effort. After the release of Gato Negro and what was said to be working on material for the band's fourth studio album in 1996 guitarist Roisin Dunne would leave the band and former Mudwimin guitarist and the band's sound engineer Lisa Faye Beatty was recruited as Dunne's replacement. The new line-up would be short lived however with the band calling it quits in 1997. Vocalist Selene Virgil would go on to work on a solo career and bassist Elizabeth Davis would continue to play in bands, notably the all-female band Von Iva, drummer Valerie Agnew would retire from playing drums, guitarist Roisin Dunne continued in various projects and the band's last guitarist Lisa Faye Beatty sadly, was killed in an auto accident in 2011. Interest in the band was revigorated in 2016 when the band members were asked if a live concert at Moe located in the band's hometown of Seattle could be released. "Live at Moe" which contained tracks from Viva Zapata, Gato Negro and one-track Lorna from the debut release Sick Em, the live album captured the band at their height, while delighting hard core fans and giving new fans the chance to discover such a groundbreaking band that helped define the 1990's era of grunge rock.
