Good morning party people who are tired of tunes in F! Today for #texasstyletuesday I bring you Smith’s Reel, in D, which exemplifies a classic Texas style trope - Hey, let’s take this classic reel that’s probably 200 years old already and add a bunch of blue notes and chromatic triplets and variations and make it a totally different thing but where you can still hear the original thing somewhere in there! This is an example of controlled improvisation, which we’ve discussed before. Within each eight bar section you’ll hear some varying ornamentation and inversions of phrases, but each section does start and end in a consistent place. It always comes back around to its traditional ending note and a new section starts again. There are improvisational elements, but the overall tune structure remains the same. I mean, basically, can we say that Texas style is the middle ground between old time and jazz? Because I think I’m saying that. That’s what I’m saying. Also, this tune has a B minor chord in the B part and that always makes everything ok. #fiddle #fiddlestar #smithsreel
