Lack of photo ID blocks housing, health care for many unhoused people in the community

For many people experiencing homelessness in the Las Vegas area, a simple photo ID can be the difference between staying on the streets and getting access to housing, health care, or a job. Without identification, people can be blocked from critical services. The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty found in a 2004 survey that more than 50 percent of respondents said they were denied crucial benefits such as Social Security income and food stamps because they did not have an ID. Philanthropist Tiger Todd, the founder of Hero School, is working to help remove that barrier. Todd hosts weekend mini academies for people living on the streets, focusing on what he describes as both prevention and reversal of homelessness for those he encounters. “Breakthrough Academy is a special thing. You don't create the magic, but the environment for the magic to happen. That's really awesome, even 30 years later, to watch that magical transformation before your eyes,” Todd said.
