But in the night they asked the leader what was happening with Thomas and the Colombian man and he responded to them 'they are dead'. So they didn't want to continue asking anything else, because they were frightened." 7. Cutaway hands 8. But he is very emotional, during the message for his family, you can see profound sadness. Marc is the one that has most back up from his friends." File - Caqueta, Colombia 15. Guarded by hundreds of armed men deep in the country's jungle Tom Howes, Marc Gonsalves and Keith Stansell pass the time by playing with a homemade deck of cards and dreaming of their families. Cut off from the outside world, their isolation was broken only after Jorge Enrique Botero, a Colombian freelance reporter travelled for days over rough roads and jungle rivers with a rebel escort to interview them on July 25 in a remote part of the country. The three Americans _ considered prisoners of war by the FARC _ sleep in an 18-by-18-foot wooden hut in beds fashioned from branches. Botero told APTN that there was always a guard just five yards away from them, and that they had been told that a rescue attempt would result in their death. Howes and Gonsalves fight boredom by playing cards made from notebook paper but the three long for a radio, according to the Colombian journalist. Botero said Howes, who at 50 is the eldest of the captives and has a young son with his Peruvian wife, spends a lot of time reflecting on his priorities. They are the first US military contractors to be captured by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, in Colombia's 39-year guerrilla war. Washington has long been providing military aid to halt cocaine production controlled by the rebels and their paramilitary foes, and recently began training and providing intelligence for counterinsurgency operations.
