The elegant and manly voice of the much missed baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky was always a perfect fit for the role of Eugene Onegin, one of his signature roles. His clear and penetrating declamation, his expressive fearlessnes, his seamless legato and flawless understanding of the Russian style - all of it made his one of the greatest assumptions of Eugen Onegin ever. Here Hvorostovsky partners the amazing Anna Netrebko in her very first interpretation of the quintessential Russian soprano role, Tatyana, at the Wiener Staatsoper, in 2013. The conductor is Andris Nelsons. Netrebko is a true relevation in the role, full of nuanced touches and some of the most beautiful piano singing I've heard in a while, but also letting her lush voice free with great top notes and a firm low register. These two Russian stars were in their most fitting repertoire and their best vocal shape. 1) Gremin, Tatyana and Onegin: Moi drug, pozvol tebye predstavit [0:00] 2) Onegin's aria: Uzhel ta samaya Tatyana [1:14] 3) Tatyana: O! Kak mnye tyazhelo! [3:39] 4) Onegin and Tatyana: Dovolno, vstante, ya dolzhna [6:19] 5) Onegin and Tatyana: Akh! O Bozhe! Uzhel, uzhel v molbye [10:32] 6) Onegin and Tatyana: Nyet! Nyet! Proshlovo ne vorotit! [15:26]
