This Irish whiskey is a hidden gem! The Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey from the Shed Distillery doesn't get as much love as some of their other products, like the Gunpowder Gin, but that should change, as it's a lovely, enjoyable Irish whiskey which hasn't been sourced! That's right, this whiskey was distilled by the Shed Distillery, in the town of Drumshanbo, the first distillery to open in the Province of Connacht in over 100 years! The Distillery takes advantage of the freedom given to them by the Pot Still category by using Barra Oats in addition to the standard malted and unmalted barley They also use first fill Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks, which give much more flavour and influence than tired old casks which have been used three or more times. It comes in at 43% which is a little low for my preference, but at least it's not down at 40%! Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Tasting Notes: Nose: Immediately, it's spicy, creamy and sweet, with the sweetness from the casks, the spiciness of the pot still and the creamy influence of the oats balancing each other out. There's creamy vanilla custard, dried figs, raisins and orange peel and a nice bit of warming spice that's somewhere between cinnamon and black pepper. Palate: The palate is quite creamy, with the dense, oily texture of pot still whiskey and a bit of toasted oak giving it some nice weight. Again, there is lots of fruit, with figs and orange peel, the vanilla notes take a bit of a back seat to the heavy hit of fruit, but there's still some caramel sweetness and a nice impression of walnut . Finish: The fruity notes fade first on the finish, but the creamy texture and oak spice linger on, as well as a light resurgence of the vanilla from the nose, before that too fades. Overall, I quite like this whiskey, and I wish they made more options! I have tried their Single Pot Still which was finished in a Pinot Noir cask and it was really nice (I have to try to get a bottle before it sells out!), and I think that this whiskey gives them a great base to explore with different cask finishes and hopefully expand their range of whiskeys in future! ------------------------------------------------------- I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too! I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails Make sure to subscribe for reviews every Wednesday and cocktail recipes every Friday! https://www.youtube.com/channel/TheWh...
