Day 217. 26km (66806kms) Out little house served us well though we missed the cooling nighttime breezeds. In the morning John fed one goat, next thing we were overrun with his goaty friends! Still unsure of the water situation I filled a 10 litre bladder, John invested in some bottled water and we set off into Wadi Bani Awf / Snake Canyon. I’ve never seen landscape like this before; palm trees have always been confined to tropical beaches in my experience, but here they line the narrow valley, dwarfed by towering vertical cliffs. Initially the road was in good repair; nice and smooth. So smooth in fact that where the water fjorded the road a sheen of slimy green caused John to come a slippery cropper; he slid off right ahead of me. Just inches from running over his head I swerved and came a cropper myself, though I escaped unharmed, John may have fractured a rib or two. Later, as the road began to resemble a rocky riverbed a particularly steep incline required that I get off to push just as a nice couple in a 4x4 stopped to chat. Unwilling to lose even the tiny amount of momentum I still had, I continued steadily pushing and answering their questions with just one word. But when I did stop to catch my breath they drew alongside me again offering drinks, an apple, and a lift to the top. Even concreted, I struggled to push Gibbo on such an incline with an extra 8kg or so of water. John (having ridden up!) came back to help me push the final yards. As it turns out we found another mosque on the route along which we shall be returning tomorrow so I’d carried all that water for nothing anyway! Thanks to John’s encouragement I struggled on along the rocky road, losing a pannier clip as I rattled along, but at last we reached the Canyon entrance. Finally I could leave the bike to continue on foot as far as the rocky boulders path allowed. Snake Canyon is best hiked the opposite way with a guide and ropes. We walked until the first (or last) insurmountable waterfall rock turned us back. In our narrow valley the night sky looked magnificent. After dinner we lay back to observe the satellites’ paths through the Milky Way and watch as the brighter stars slipped behind the cliff horizon whilst the earth rotated in the midst of it all.
