How real is neurosurgery compared to TV? In this episode of Science Really Works (UCalgary iGEM), we sit down with Dr. Brij Karmur, a neurosurgery resident pursuing a PhD in epidemiology, to unpack life in one of medicine’s most demanding fields. From 5:30 a.m. rounds to 26-hour call shifts, Bridge shares the gritty day-to-day, the “why” that keeps him going, and the moments that make it all worth it (like turning a near-fatal hydrocephalus crisis around in minutes). We also dive into the future of brain care: AI models to read MRI signals and predict meningioma behavior, endoscopic skull-base surgery through the nose, surgical robotics (and how it actually works), regenerative medicine for spinal cord injury, and what Neuralink-style implants can, and can’t, do. Along the way, Brij tackles ethics (AI accountability in the OR), coping with complications, and practical advice for students aiming at hard paths, whether in medicine, research, or startups.
