Brecon Mountain Railway

During a holiday at a farm near Abergavenny, we visited the Brecon Mountain Railway, which runs from Pant, near Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales into the Brecon Beacons National Park. Being a fan of American locomotives, I was pleased that we were hauled by Number 2, a beautiful1930-built Baldwin that had formerly worked in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The line has great scenery- far better than some other narrow gauge railways, and the facilities and staff were excellent. I look forward to seeing it again when the extention to Torpantau is completed. Although I had left South Wales in the 1970s to work abroad (in England!) I was amazed to be recognised by the Fireman (Francis) who had also been a member of the Caerphilly Railway Society. That was a very pleasant surprise- what a small world!
