https://joub.ch: In 2016, the twentieth JOUB concert season, the University Orchestra of the University of Bern, together with the Jazz Orchestra of the University of Bern will perform the work Scheherajazz as a world premiere. Lloyd "Skip" Martin (1916-1976), an American clarinetist, saxophonist, and arranger, revised Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic poem, Scheherazade to create Scheherajazz for big band and symphony orchestra. The score is considered lost and was transcribed 2015/2016 on behalf of JOUB. Scheherazade of 1888 The Scheherazade is a symphonic poem by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov dating from 1888. The orchestral work is based on the tale, 'Thousand and One Nights', and is characterized by two typical features of Russian music and especially Rimsky-Korsakov's compositions: a colorful instrumentation and the enthusiasm for everything mid-Eastern typical for the time. The suite consists of four movements. The theme of the first movement is the tyrannical Sultan. But soon, after a few chords from the woodwinds, the only theme that reappears in each set is heard; it symbolizes the character of the narrator herself, Scheherazade, his wife, who ultimately manages to soothe him with their stories. It is a haunting melody of the solo violin which is sensually conveying the message to the accompaniment of the harp. Scheherajazz of 1959 Skip Martin wrote interludes for Big Band, based on the motives of Scheherazade, and wove them into the four sets of Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestral work, and Scheherajazz was born. You never get the impression of two listening experiences competing; on the contrary, it is a balanced and wonderful passing of the musical ball between symphony and jazz orchestra. Scheherajzz was recorded in a studio in Los Angeles in 1959, and was never performed live.
