Artist Mickalene Thomas: Being an Artist Is a Radical Act

”I believe in the power of images. And I believe images do change the world.” We visited Mickalene Thomas in her Brooklyn studio to talk about the transformative power of art. ”When you're standing in front of something that impacts you, all you can think to do is create an action. You don't necessarily know what the outcome is. You just know there was a moment you can't define, but it leads you somewhere. And what it led me to was not even a thought; it was like I just moved through by going to the art store, doing these things, not really knowing that I would end up where I am today. But I knew I was transformed enough to go, that's what I want to do.” Thomas, who, among other things, is known for her elaborate mixed-media paintings of black women, continues: ”I think there as a black American queer woman is a history of patchworking your narrative and story, right? It's a form of identity that has a long history within black American history of safekeeping things and putting them together, quilt making, fabricating of identities, of layering and keeping them. And then another way, there's a mode of construct to it, right? There's a political sort of inherence to a sort of collage of gathering and making sense.” ”How do I translate the world around me and what I see as a creative outlet? It's challenging. I think artists are conduits, right? We're cultivators, but we're also very vulnerable and sensitive. I think we have these antennas that sort of connect, you know, to things that are unusual to someone normal or who lives their everyday life as a nine-to-five. We're always looking and taking in information. I'm a very visual person, so I'm constantly kind of scanning and registering.” Mickalene Thomas is a renowned multidisciplinary artist celebrated for her vibrant, rhinestone-adorned portraits of Black women. Exploring themes of identity, race, and gender, her work explores themes of Black female identity and its complexities within Western culture. A Tony-nominated co-producer, curator, educator, and mentor, Thomas made history in 2023 as the first Black queer femme artist with a Yale University scholarship in her name. Her work is held in prominent collections, including MoMA, the Whitney, and the Smithsonian. Mickalene Thomas was interviewed by Marc-Christoph Wagner in her studio in Brooklyn, New York, in March 2025.
