I made a few of Betsy’s recipes — and as I stirred and measured, I found myself thinking about how she altered her cooking over the years as her husband’s health changed. Isn’t that what love does? I even took myself out to a little SOHO-like restaurant bar here in town — had the loveliest evening and met some wonderful new people. There’s something about nighttime in my city… I understand why writers were drawn to places filled with lamplight and conversation in the 1940s and 50s. There is magic in it.
