Localization 101: L10N Terminology - Lost in Loc?

Welcome to our 2nd Episode of Localization 101. This time we are talking about Localization, or L10n, Terminology. Localization can entail very complex processes. Here are some of the terms that are most relevant to localization from the client’s and manager’s perspectives. Translation Management System: A translation management system (or TMS for short) is software designed to facilitate complex translation tasks. It streamlines translation and localization workflows online across borders and timezones. Translation Memory: A translation memory (or TM) is a database that stores original and translated content for a language pair in translation units, also called segments. The TM is used to store cohesive translations and terminology, and to eliminate redundant segment translation. Its content is as ever-growing as the translation needs of a product, so it’s important to keep TMs clean and cohesive at all times during each and every update. Translation Glossary: Usually produced and shared along with a TM, a translation glossary is a list of entries, organized in alphabetical order or by categories, that clarifies the meaning of key terms related to a specific subject. Terminology Management: Terminology management is the process of researching, choosing, defining, updating, and maintaining key terms in the local language for specific content. The resulting termbase or glossary aims to facilitate consistent terminology to standardize translations and eliminate confusion. Fuzzy Matching and Exact Matching: TM tools suggest fuzzy matches and exact matches while localizing a product. A fuzzy match means it is an approximate match based on spelling and meaning. It provides the translator with a starting point to quickly find the right term to use for the document. An exact match means that the term or phrase is 100% exact. With exact matches, the translator does not have to do any changes and can work faster on the translation project. TMX and XLIFF files: Translation Memory Exchange Format and Localization Interchange File Format. These formats are formats designed to make the exchange of translation memories and multi-lingual data exchange easier between translation vendors and tools. Neural Machine Translation Post-Editing (NMTPE) NMTPE or Neural Machine Translation Post-Editing is another form of MT or Machine Translation. Alternatively used on request and can process generous volumes of text, followed up by a review from a human translator as a compulsory step of quality assurance. Continuous Localization: Continuous localization integrates the translation into software development cycles. Localization teams work with content as soon as developers make it available. Agile Localization: Agile localization makes translation part of the continuous development cycle instead of an extra step to take after the versions are ready for launch.
