As the slow fashion movement gains momentum, it is becoming clearer that we have lost the collective, intrinsic, scientific knowledge of natural fibers and their functions. Did you know that wool clothing is the best option for you if you’re stranded in a hot dry desert? Did you know that downy wool is so warm because the hairs are actually hollow tubes? Did you know that linen is a good material for sails because it gets stronger when wet? Our predecessors knew things like this. And more. And they used this intimate knowledge of the FIBERS that made their fabrics to create any custom textiles to fit their needs. The slow fashion movement has seen a wonderful increase in knitters, weavers, makers, and designers, as well as an increased awareness for responsible textile and fabric production. However, our collective gap in knowledge about fibers themselves has left us unknowingly creating and purchasing fabric and textiles that might not necessarily fit our needs.
