Philosophy Portal courses are for life: https://philosophyportal.online/courses -- ŽIŽEKIAN MASTERCLASS:    • Žižekian Masterclass   This Masterclass focuses on the way Žižek attempts to revive Plato for the 21st century. This revival is necessary because dominant 20th century philosophy, from existentialist to vitalist to Marxist and analytical traditions, sought to negate Plato in order to differentiate and develop a new understanding of the truth. However, Žižek claims that such negation and differentiation came in the form of creating a straw man ("fictional absurdity") of Plato's basic philosophy, and under-appreciates the historical efficacy of Plato's core assumptions for the development of Western civilization, specifically Western religion. In order to revive Plato, Žižek revisits the notion of Plato's Cave, an analogy we all know from first year philosophy courses which communicates the distinction between relative appearances and absolute reality, where the relative appearances are our historical experience, and absolute reality is the home of the soul. In order to revive Plato for the 21st century, Žižek suggests that we should seek to understand the eternity in appearances, without projecting this eternity into a beyond or behind of appearances, and also situate this project on the level of the suprasensible phenomena.
