The most common reasons for the flashing light is a faulty battery or alternator. However, it is starting to look like the ignition switch is also a common sneaky failure point that can steer you in the wrong direction in terms of accurately diagnosing the vehicle. Last October I replaced the alternator in my wife's 2005 X5 3.0i after the original failed on her commute home from work. I knew the battery was still around 6 years old at that point, but did not replace it as we had planned on upgrading to the E70 shortly (we still have not upgraded obviously!) Knowing the age of the battery, I decided to start there since the voltage was reading 11.4 to 11.5 on the scan tool with the car off. However, this did not repair the flickering light issue. Next, I tested the voltage at the alternator with my Creator C310+ scan tool ( Buy it here: https://amzn.to/2Zzsp2C ) and the reading was in the 13.5-13.9 range which seems acceptable. Despite the voltage being okay, I decided to just replace the alternator as the battery was already replaced. Upon visual inspection of the alternator, I found the power steering reservoir leaking into the alternator and surrounding cooling hoses pretty badly. I thought for sure the alternator is experiencing a slow/intermittent failure due to the fluid leaking into it over time - however I was wrong again! Reading last night on XOutPost (THE place to go for X5 forums) I read multiple threads of others experiencing this same issue: flickering battery light, new battery and new alternator, but the flickering remains. In all 3 cases that I read about, the faulty ignition switch was the resolution. I installed a new Febi switch made in Germany and that resolved the flickering!
