THE ETHNIC GROUP CALLED ETULO: A UNIQUE ETHNIC GROUP OF BENUE STATE Culture they say is a way of life of a people. What this means is that a people are known by their culture through their way of life and this way of life therefore becomes their identity. This way of life encompasses what they eat, the way they dress, their belief system, traditions and practices etc which defines them and as well gives them an identity. Culture is sacrosanct and the sacrosanctity of culture will not, cannot and should not be overemphasized. This is why it has become necessary to briefly re-historicise history hence a nation or people without history have no identity and are therefore headed for extinction. It has therefore become pertinent that we have a brief knowledge of the ethnic group called Etulo. ORIGIN The Etulos are one of the ethnic groups alongside Idoma, Arago, Yala, Jukum etc that formed the erstwhile Kwararafa Kingdom before migration to the present Benue Valley. The name Etulo means: i. The people ii. The language the people speak iii. Their habitat (the land they habitate along both banks of River Katsina ala). The Etulo people constitute one of the minority ethnic groups indigenous to Benue state of Nigeria after Tiv, Idoma and Igede but unfortunately, when tribes or ethnic groups in Benue state are being mentioned, they are relegated to the background by virtue of the fact that they are a minority. This is no wonder, when the name Etulo is being mentioned as an ethnic group in Benue state, people outside the state tend not to believe. The Etulo people reside on both banks of River Katsina Ala, about 136 kilometres east of Makurdi, the Benue State capital. They belong to the APA family of the Kwararafa confederation. The Etulo land also referred to as Ikpese Etulo stretches from 7North to 9 degrees North latitudes and lies within 11 degrees East to 13 degrees East longitude; with Adi and Katsina Ala as their principal towns. The Etulo land is almost entirely situated in the basin of River Katsina Ala. The Etulo land is bound by Mbagen clan on the north by the Kusuv and Shorov clans on the east and across river Katsina Ala, they share boundary with Ikyurav and Shitile clans in the west. The Etulos speak their mother tongue called Etulo. Etulo as a language is closely related to Idoma, Arago and Jukun; hence they have similar words but with variation in accents. They are indigenous to Benue State of Nigeria and live on both banks of the River Katsina-ala (that's Katsina ala and Buruku local governments areas of Benue State respectively). The major occupation of the Etulo people is basically fishing, farming, hunting and pottery. Etulo people have a unique virtue of honesty, accountability, transparency and honesty. They are very peaceful ETULO is the 4th largest ethnic group in Benue state after Tiv, Idoma and Igede; they are also found indigened in Taraba State. However, due to intense, purposeful and deliberate marginalization in Benue state, we are not mentioned when ethnic groups in Benue are being mentioned and so we are not popular but etulo remain proud of who they are because they have a distinct identity we shall not, will not, and can never trade our identity for anything else because we are proud of our identity and know who they are so they will always embrace our identity because God made us who we are for a purpose. Watch and be bless
