Today’s topic is Harry Beck and his tragic fall from Pittsburgh’s Bluff Street Steps over 125 years ago. Harry was the son of William Beck, one of the founders of Doyle & Co., a glassworks that operated in Pittsburgh from 1867 to 1891. You'll learn a bit about Harry and what those living in the area had to face while commuting to this neighborhood during the 1880s and 1900s. For those unfamiliar with Pittsburgh, Bluff is a street located south of the point where the three rivers converge in the aptly named Bluff neighborhood. Today, you’ll find Duquesne University and UPMC Mercy Hospital. You will also still find a set of steps that take you from Bluff Street down to Second Avenue by the entrance to the Armstrong Tunnel. It is one of Pittsburgh’s 800 staircases found throughout the city, totaling 45,000 individual steps.
