TAXA TUESDAY 🌿 w/ the Florida Native Plant Society Meet Shining Lyonia! Shining Lyonia aka Fetterbush Lyonia lucida Family: Ericaceae Lyonia lucida is an evergreen shrub 3-6ft tall, which forms dense colonies via underground rhizomes in areas with moist, acidic soils such as wet flatwoods, acidic peaty wetlands, scrub pond margins, and swamp forests etc. It’s found across the Coastal Plain and throughout Florida. The species epithet “lucida” is latin for clear, bright, or shining, and refers to the leaves which are glossy and glabrous - hence its common name. The urceolate (urn-shaped) flowers appear in spring in shades of white to deep rose pink, and attract a variety of bees, butterflies, and moths. The fruit follows in the form of a dry capsule, which are food for birds like quail, as well as other wildlife like bears. See if you can spot Lyonia lucida in your area, and consider planting on in your yard if you have the right conditions for it! ………… Thanks for tuning in! 👋🏻 Photos & description by Lilly Anderson-Messec, FNPS Director of North Florida Programs #terminologytuesday #terminology #botany #nativeplants #ecology #plantfacts #scicomm #education #taxatuesday #environmentaleducation #floridanativeplantsociety #biodiveristy #taxa #taxon #plants #fetterbush #lyonia #shininglyonia #nativeplants #floridanativeplants #lyonialucida
