Human bodies can heal themselves from many injuries, such as scratches, bruises, and broken bones, but giving similar abilities to robots has proven extremely challenging. Now, researchers reporting in Nano Letters have developed small, swimming robots that can magnetically heal themselves on-the-fly, which could help make tougher devices for environmental or industrial clean up. ACS’ Headline Science shows how these swimmers make themselves whole again after being cut into two or three pieces. “Swimmers Heal on the Move Following Catastrophic Damage” – Joseph Wang, D.Sc.
