READING 1: Joel 2:12-18 RESP: Psalm 50(51):3-6,12-14,17 READING 2: 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2 GOSPEL: Matthew 6:1-6,16-18 Ash Wednesday (The beginning of Lenten Season) On this sacred day of Ash Wednesday, the Church opens the holy season of Lent, a time of grace, repentance, and spiritual renewal. Today marks the beginning of a forty-day journey in which we are invited to return to the Lord with sincere hearts, preparing ourselves to celebrate the great mysteries of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection at Easter. Ash Wednesday is both solemn and hopeful. The ashes placed upon our foreheads remind us of our human frailty—“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”—but they also proclaim God’s mercy, calling us to conversion. This is not a day of sadness alone, but a day of new beginnings, when God lovingly invites His people to come back to Him. The Liturgy today emphasizes that Lent is not merely about external religious practices, but about an interior change of heart. The Lord desires not empty rituals, but genuine repentance, humility, and a renewed relationship with Him. ************** Reflection: Beloved brothers and sisters, Ash Wednesday reminds us that life is short, but God’s mercy is great. The ashes on our foreheads call us to repentance and a new beginning with the Lord. Lent invites us to return to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—not as outward rituals, but as a sincere change of heart. Prayer draws us closer to God, fasting frees us from sin and selfishness, and charity opens our hearts to others. May this holy season renew our souls and lead us to Easter joy. Amen.
