"Riders Of The California Surf" (1947) is a 15-minute silent color film, created in collaboration with the Hermosa Beach Surfing Club. It encompasses many elements that would later become commonplace in surf movies, including scenes of women on the beach, wipeouts, humorous moments of novice surfers, and a picturesque sunset closing the film. This video represents our dedicated effort to compile two reels graciously provided by Hermosa Pix from the Prelinger Archive (referenced below). Please be aware that some scenes may be missing or possibly arranged out of sequence. Additionally, it's important to note that the soundtrack has been added for entertainment purposes and was not part of the original silent film. We invite you to relish this treasured artifact from the world of surfing, meticulously remastered for the enjoyment of today's generation of surf enthusiasts. If you appreciate our work, kindly consider subscribing and liking this video. For your convenience, we have identified individuals featured in the footage at specific timestamps: -01:36 Pier divers: Fred and John Kerwin (near and far on the pier deck), Joe Kerwin (near on the pier rail) and Bill Edgar (last to go with a perfect swan dive off the rail); 02:45 Ted Kerwin body surfing 03:35 Dotty Droste (Ted Kerwin’s fiancé) belly boarding; 04:29 Ed Edgar shaping solid redwood and balsa surfboard; 10:25 Jim Kerwin riding “White Lightening” 11:00 Mary Rasey (Fred Kerwin’s fiancé in orange bathing suit) giving surfboard riding a try.
