He began his career at the Fire Research Station which was part of BRE at that time. Between 1997 and 1999 he did his Master’s in Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland. Then in 1999 Mike took up an academic position at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand where he completed his PhD and eventually became the director of the fire engineering programme. Since joining OFR in 2017 he has been working on research arising from the Grenfell Tower fire along with other commercial projects. He maintains connections with various academic institutions through the co-supervision of students, collaborative research and guest teaching. Mike has contributed to over 250 publications on a wide range of fire science and engineering topics including active systems, human behaviour, fire and smoke modelling, vehicles fires, etc. Mike has just been made a Fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), he is also a Chartered Engineer through the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and is an adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury.
