Founding and Trading History: The Sebina watch company was founded by Paul-Virgile Mathez in 1904. By 1919, it was trading as “Sabina” from Tramelan in Switzerland. Fredy Mathez was later associated with the company during its winding-up process in 2012. Name Origin: The name “Sabina” has an interesting historical connection. It refers to a female from the Sabine tribe, who lived in the Apennines before the Roman Empire. The name may carry connotations of wisdom and heritage. Unfortunately, detailed information about Sebina/Sabina watches remains scarce. Restoring a vintage Sebina watch with an ETA 1120 movement can be a fascinating journey, especially when dealing with delicate components like the hairspring, pallet fork, and centre wheel. Let’s dive into the restoration process: Hairspring Repair: Inspect the damaged hairspring carefully. If it’s severely bent or distorted, consider replacing it. If repairable, use specialized tweezers and a loupe to gently manipulate the hairspring back into its proper shape. Ensure the hairspring is correctly positioned on the balance staff and secured. Although I feel this one is too much for my skills. Pallet Fork and Centre Wheel: Remove the movement from the case and disassemble it. Examine the pallet fork and centre wheel closely. Bent components can affect accuracy and performance. If bent, use precision tools to straighten them. Be extremely gentle to avoid further damage. Lubricate the pallet fork pivots and ensure smooth movement. If all else fails a donor movement will be sourced and used!!!! Cleaning and Lubrication: Clean all components thoroughly using an ultrasonic cleaner or watch cleaning machine. Lubricate the pivots and jewels with high-quality watch oil. Reassemble the movement, ensuring proper alignment and tension. Regulation and Testing: Regulate the watch by adjusting the balance wheel’s timing screws or hairspring stud. Test the movement for accuracy, amplitude, and beat error. Make any necessary adjustments until the watch runs within acceptable parameters. Remember, vintage watch restoration requires patience, skill, and attention to detail.
