Bush and De Hoop Scheffer shake hands, pull out to wide shot STORYLINE South African President Thabo Mbeki on Wednesday urged US President George W. Bush and other world leaders to use next month's G-8 summit in Scotland to take a strong stance against poverty in Africa. Mbeki, in Washington DC on an official visit, was speaking after a luncheon meeting at the White House with President Bush regarding the African agenda for next month's G-8 summit. While praising US assistance to South Africa and the African continent, Mbeki told Bush he was going to have to "ask for even more support." Mbeki said the July meeting of the world's major industrialised countries offered leaders a chance to convey "a very strong positive message about movement on the African continent away from poverty, underdevelopment and conflict." The Bush administration has opposed European proposals to boost development assistance by imposing an international aviation tax or through bond guarantees. But Bush said he has been working with Britain and other countries "to advance the African agenda that has been on the G8's agenda." He added, however, that countries such as the US would not give aid to nations that are corrupt or "don't hold true to democratic principles". Bush said the Egyptian president assured him that was his intention.
