We will be reporting on SDGs initiatives in a series. This time, we will focus on a woman who moved to Kagoshima and is working with people with disabilities to recycle marine plastic waste. Trash is transformed into something stylish! Beautiful marbled coasters and key chains, as well as a variety of eye-catching colorful miscellaneous goods! ? The real identity of these items is "plastic waste" that has washed up on the shore. Kaori Okada, who is working to recycle plastic waste, is an employee of "Fuu," an NPO that provides welfare services in Minamisatsuma City, and together with people with disabilities, she creates and sells new products using plastic waste that has washed up on Fukiagehama Beach. It has been reported that approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste is discharged into the ocean every year around the world, which is a major issue. Okada is 33 years old and from Tokyo. At the age of 27, she left her job at a bank and went to Malaysia as a member of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers. What she witnessed there was a serious "waste problem"... Waste sorting and collection were insufficient, and a lot of waste had nowhere to go. (Okada) "I wanted to be able to help people overseas who are struggling with a lot of plastic waste directly in the future, so I started working on plastic waste." After returning to Japan, he moved to Kagoshima to find someone with experience in making a machine to process plastic waste, and in 2022, he started working as a local revitalization volunteer in Hioki City. During his tenure, he held workshops as well as making products using plastic waste. His current workplace, which was interested in his activities, contacted him, and after completing his two-year term, he moved to Minamisatsuma City last year. This initiative led by Okada supports employment for people with disabilities. Plastic waste collected on the beach is washed and cut into sizes that are easy to process. The plastic is melted by a machine and put into a mold, and the molded parts are joined together to make a "castanet"! The finished products are sold at roadside stations and online under the brand name "fuuno." (Okada) "I hope to be an opportunity to think about what the plastic waste problem is, and I work every day hoping to create a hook for that." They treat plastic waste as a "local resource" and breathe new life into it with the help of local people... The core of their activities is "local production and consumption" of plastic. Okada and his team's activities are creating a positive cycle for the community!
