Ex Commonwealth Railways first mainline diesel locomtovie GM1 is beng transported across Australia from Parkes in NSW. To be placed into the WA Rail Heritage rail museum in Bassendean. GM1 weighing in at 109 tonnes, is loaded on a 9 lines float. The journey has taken 8 days to arrive at Bassendean WA. All video locations are along Great Eastern Highway. Thursday 4 April 2022. The first two scenes are taken at two of the bridges in the Northam area. The lead pilots on heavy oversize loads, that have to travel at 10 kmph, must be glad to get away from this part of the GEH. For there's about 8 bridges over 7.6 km, that they have to call in over the UHF, to approaching truck drivers. To mention the name of the bridge, saying that it will be closed for the oversize travelling at bridge supervision at 10kmph. Busy time indeed, on the mike! The last scene, is at Greenmount Hill, where I video 2 east bound switchrooms, going up hill. And the Doolan's Volvo driver, in control holding the descent speed with GM1 on board. These guys, have picked up an extra rear pilot, to close both lanes, until at the bottom of the hill, always for safety reasons. Check out the oversize heading east up the hill, they also have two rear pilots, blocking anyone from trying to overtake on the turning lanes. You might notice, the road in the background? That is the Old York Road, many a motorist will use that to get ahead of any slow moving heavy oversize climbing Greenmount Hill. As it rejoins GEH a few kms ahead, and once was the main road heading east.
