Various of Bush and Koizumi (with wives) watching exhibition of traditional Japanese horseback archery (Yabusame) 3. Various shots of George and Laura Bush visiting Meji shrine 4. Two shots of Bush greeting traditional Japanese horseback archers STORYLINE: US President George W. Bush, opening a two-day visit to Japan on Monday, called Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi 'a great reformer' and said he has confidence in his ability to lead Japan out of its economic doldrums. At their meeting, Koizumi gave Bush a painting of a traditional Japanese horseback archer. The US president saw it as a symbol of the US-led war against terrorism. At the start of a three-nation Asian tour, President Bush was publicly embracing Koizumi and his agenda while privately prodding the prime minister to take the painful steps toward reversing a decade-long economic slump, aides said. But he dismissed concerns in Asia and around the world about his lumping of North Korea, Iran and Iraq in a so-called 'axis of evil'. Bush began his first full day in Tokyo with a display of traditional horseback archery, Yabusame, in the grounds of the Meji shrine. The shrine, where ruling emperors were once worshipped as divine, was destroyed in World War II by US bombings and rebuilt in 1958. Japan's fortunes are critical to the US economy, which is showing signs of recovery. The president's seven-day trip to Asia also includes stops in South Korea and China, where the war against terrorism will take centre stage.
