The Brush Fly is one of the most effective patterns for targeting predatory fish like tigerfish, Nile perch, and jack crevalle. At our camps across Africa, this fly is a go-to for its ability to push water, create a strong profile, and trigger aggressive strikes. In this video, expert tier and guide David Taylor shares his unique method for tying the Brush Fly. Unlike traditional composite loop techniques, David’s approach offers better colour blending and a more streamlined tying process. This variation has been tested and proven on the Faro River in Cameroon and both the Mnyera & Ruhudji Rivers in Tanzania. Materials Used in This Fly: Hook: 3/0 – 8/0 (SF fibre for the head), #1 – 2/0 (sculpting fibre/sculpting flash fibre) – Tiemco 600SP 3/0 used here Thread: 200D Nano Silk Tail: Mix of tan and olive 5–7” saddles (adjust size for smaller flies) Bucktail: Olive (or match your preferred colour) Marabou: Tan (can be substituted) SF Fibre: Bleeding perch (or mix colours for contrast) Eyes: 6mm or 8mm stick-on eyes Glue: Glue Genius by Glue Devil Tying Tips from David: ✔ Use shorter saddle feathers for smaller sizes, tying them in where the fibres transition to marabou for a natural taper. ✔ Adjust feather count based on hook size (5-6 for 3/0–5/0, 8 for 8/0). ✔ Experiment with colours—customise the fly to match your local baitfish.
