(17 Oct 2018) EU leaders from the centre-right European People's Party met at the party's headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday, ahead of a Brexit-focused summit. Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said that "there has been some progress made in the last couple of days between the negotiators," but insisted that a transitional deal between Britain and the EU cannot replace a permanent "protocol on Ireland which assures there won't be a hard border on Ireland". Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that discussions are "complicated but we try to do our best to have a fair Brexit anyway." Earlier, British Prime Minister Theresa May said she thinks a Brexit deal can be sealed "over the next days and weeks" with hard work from the UK and the European Union. Speaking before she addresses her 27 EU counterparts at a Brussels summit dinner, May said "most of the issues" on a withdrawal agreement have been resolved, though a gap remains on the issue of the Irish border.
