Schubert "Der Doppelgänger", Mark Reizen, Bass (1895-1992) rec. 1938 Translation by Marina Gusti. Mark Osipovich Reizen 1895-1992, the legendary bass of the Bolshoi is well known as a great performer of opera and of Russian songs and romances. In this new series we propose to present Mark Reizen in performances of works by composers other than Russian. While perhaps less known in these, Mark Reizen shows us his greatness, in these exquisite performances. Here we present “Der Doppelgänger” by Franz Schubert from the cycle "Schwanengesang" , D957 No 13 on a text by Heinrich Heine. This is recorded in 1938, with piano accompaniment by Abram Makarov. It is sung in Russian, the name in Russian is "Dvoynik" (Двойник) . To our knowledge, this early recording by Mark Reizen has not been released on CD or online. Because of the importance of the text, this video includes the full German text and tanslation to English. Translation by Marina Gusti. The Russian text sung by Mark Reizen text is a variant of the Translation by poet Ilya Tyumenev (1855-1927).
