A medieval song honoring Samwise Gamgee — the quiet strength behind the greatest journey. This piece tells the story of loyalty, resilience, and love that carried hope when all strength was gone. Sam is not a warrior of legends, but the heart that refused to give up when the world grew darkest. Part of Tolkien’s World in Songs, a fan-made musical tribute inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Lyrics: A gardener with hands of the earth and the soil, Whose heart was as honest as his daily toil. He sought for no kingdom, no silver, no fame, Just tending the flowers and the hearth’s quiet flame. But a promise was made when the shadows grew long: "Don't lose him, Samwise, for the journey is strong." He crossed the wide border and left all behind, The truest of friends that a traveler could find. Through lands that were wild and through mountains of stone, Where the chill of the darkness was chilled to the bone. He carried the pans and he carried the bread, While the shadow of Sauron loomed over his head. He suffered the insults, the doubt, and the cold, With a spirit more precious than diamonds or gold. Against the great spider in her cavern of spite, He stood as a beacon of ancient, pure light. Samwise the Brave! The hero so bright, Who stood by his master in the deepest of night. He wears no crown, and he seeks no decree, But his loyalty sets the whole of the world free. The arm that upholds and the soul that believes, The heart that the bardo forever perceives. They came to the fire at the end of the road, Where Frodo was crushed by the weight of the load. In the ash and the dust of the Mountain of Doom, Where the end of the world was beginning to loom. "I cannot carry the Ring, it is true, But I can carry the Ring-bearer too!" And up through the fire, he carried his friend, To the brink of the world where the story would end. When the gold was unmade and the shadow had fled, And the sun rose again on the fields of the dead. He went back to the Shire, to his garden so fair, To the scent of the blossom and the cool morning air. He planted the seed of the silver-leafed tree, As the world was becoming what it’s meant to be. He laid down the sword and he took up the spade, The greatest of heroes that God ever made. Many will sing of the King and his blade, Of the wizard’s counsel and the plans they have made. But the bardo knows who the real victor was: The man who was faithful just purely because. The foundation of hope, the spirit of grace, The light that reflects in a simple man’s face. Now he rests with his Rosie, with peace in his eyes, Under the blue of the beautiful skies. His children hear stories of darkness and light, Of kings and of orcs and the end of the night. He smiles as he tends to his garden and kin, The hero who fought till the world could begin. The ballad is finished, the lute strings are still, A monument stands to his wonderful will. The gardener... who saved the whole world. The greatest banner that was ever unfurled. Samwise Gamgee... the hero of old. (Final sweet, lingering lute chord) [End]
