It is a natural fortress located atop a steep cliff on a leaf-shaped plateau between two deep river valleys, and was an important stop along the Silk Road. Jiaohe Ancient City Facts Jiaohe Ancient City is the previous capital of Cheshi Kingdom. It has a history of over 2000 years and is the largest, oldest and best preserved earth building city in the world. It is like a huge military fortress standing on the 30-meter high loess platform. Now it is a must-see in Turpan and we can still find the trace of history walking in the ruins. It's most recommended to go there in the late afternoon so that you can avoid the heat and catch the sunset.
