ThroBak SLE-101 MXV's...The Greatest PAF Replicas EVER Made?!?

Here are some pickups I've been dying to try out for the longest time! These are the SLE-101's from ThroBak. If you've ever gone down the PAF reproduction rabbit hole, you'll definitely have come across Jon Gundry - and his quest to replicate the Seth Lover's legendary pickup from the 1950s down to every infinitesimally tiny detail. He's stopped at literally nothing in order to achieve 100% vintage accuracy. The covers contain no copper, and are plated by the same company who did the originals. The wooden spacers are sourced from the same part of America. The pole screws are custom-cast steel, with precisely the correct carbon content as what was produced back in the day. The butyrate bobbins are custom made too, going so far as to replicate small imperfections in Gibson's 4 casting moulds (the slight sinkage between the slug holes as they cool; the 1-4 numberings on the inside of the bobbins, the slight asymmetry and tooling marks....it's all there. But that's not even the really nerdy stuff! Jon has bought some of the original machines from the old Gibson factory (now occupied by The Heritage) that were used to make old PAFs, and he uses those exact machines to wind these: the Lessona 102 and Slug 101 in the case of the SLE-101s, to be precise. The two coils in each pickup have been wound with the vintage-correct machines, meaning that the winding patterns are EXACTLY right; the DC resistance offsets in the coils have been matched to specific vintage examples of PAFs that sound especially magical. Seriously, no stone has remained unturned. These pickups do come at a substantial financial cost...but you seriously can't find any PAF repros that are more accurate. Today, I've got them in my Les Paul Standard, and I'm going to plug that straight into the front end of a clone of a mid-60s Marshall JTM45...and absolutely dime it. All the dynamics, cleanup, etc will be done using picking and the guitar's volume knobs. These pickups will effortlessly take you from a whisper to a roar! What do you think? 'THAT' sound? Or do you have other PAF replicas you prefer? Comment below! Guitar is a 1992 Gibson Les Paul Standard w/ ThroBak SLE-101s. Recorded with Vajra JTM45, through a Zilla Studio Pro closed-back 2x12 with Celestion Heritage G12H55 Greenback and Fane Ascension F70 speakers. Recorded with an Aston Spirit Condenser, Shure SM57 and sE RNR1 ribbon, with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic. 0:00 Intro 4:18 Cleaner Tones 7:12 Crunchy Tones 15:13 Outro [email protected] Vector images by freepik.com
