NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an intergovernmental military alliance focused on the defense of any of its member countries with the popular saying, “An attack on one, is an attack on all.” NATO was formed out of the fear of Soviet interference against the Western World, worried that if they were separated and alone, they are susceptible to communist influence, thus NATO was born. During the Cold War, NATO was specifically an anti Soviet/Communist oriented alliance, however after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the main purpose of this organization was somewhat lost, now focusing on defending each other, which was showcased in NATO’s response to the 9/11 attacks.
