Justin Sledge is the host of the popular Esoterica channel, devoted to an academic and historical approach to kabbalah, gnosticism and other religious and occult topics. It is less well known that he is also a committed Marxist and knowledgeable about continental theory (Bataille, Deleuze, Meillassioux etc). The focus of our discussion is the relationship between esotericism and materialist critical theory (he insists that there is none), but we discuss other topics like the practice of doing philosophy and pedagogy online as well as his love of black metal (he’s a Liturgy fan). Justin is an extremely important contemporary philosopher in my view. His channel isn’t just the best source of esotericism content on YouTube, it is like several orders of magnitude better than any other. The range of his knowledge amazes me, and recently he’s begun to promote Cordavero’s (rather than the better known Lurianic) approach to Kabbalah. I hope more people begin to produce this level of content online (or anywhere).
