My name is Rashard Dacus. I’m a physician here at the University of Virginia in the department of orthopedic surgery. I take care of hand and upper extremity injuries on the orthopedic side, from the shoulder to the fingertips. I see patients from age 2-100, with everything from sports injuries, to arthritis to trauma, kind of cover all those bases. I try to get to know my patients. I really want to know what makes them tick, what they value in life because those are the ways that I can help them. If they really need to get back to work, I want to get them back to work. If they want to be able to knit, I want to get them to be able to knit. So those values I think for me, are the investment I have in the patient and I think that interaction fosters a better relationship in general. For anyone with a problem with their hand, in particular, UVA should be the first on their list. We have a program here that we can take care of just about any problem. We’re also able to streamline care. We’re able to take care of things from a therapy standpoint, from a clinical standpoint, from a surgical standpoint, X-ray laboratory. We have a very collaborative group and the door is wide open. We are able to take care of problems that a lot of places can’t.
