Maya Angelou -Poetry Reading by Shanid. MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014)* Born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Raised by her grandmother after her parents divorced when she was three. Educated at various schools, won a dance scholarship to San Francisco's Labor School. High school education was interrupted by pregnancy in her senior year. In her struggle to survive after leaving school, Angelou worked in a range of jobs including fry cook, mechanic and nightclub singer. Married Tosh Angelos in 1950. Angelou sang and danced to calypso music around San Francisco and toured Europe in an opera in 1954/55. In 1959 Angelou moved to New York to concentrate on writing; she drew inspiration from the Harlem Writer's Guild and became involved in civil rights protests. Angelou's most celebrated work 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' (1969) deals with her childhood in St. Louis and Arkansas. Married Paul du Feu in 1983. Achieved enormous commercial, and critical, success during her lifetime and received over fifty honorary degrees. Died in 1914 in North Carolina, USA.
